I really like the general approach here, Kate, and good on tou or the questions to your kid. Lots to take forward for anyone interested in developing themselves. My main consideration is that for certain times in sport failure is failure. If you made a mistake that caused you to lose an Olympic gold then I would challenge anyone to say, "Hey, I still won today because I learned what didn't work." (And I only have 4 years to wait until I can rectify it!!!)
Sometimes failure is failure, irrespective of what we learn. Such is objectivity that is measured by outcomes.
Yeah, totally get what you’re saying but what I mean is not ‘I lost gold but I still won’ but more like ‘if I don’t look at why I lost gold and look to work on that’ then that’s true failure…not the actual loss of the gold in that moment. The failure is in not collecting the data around the loss to move forward from it. No team I ever worked with decided they had failed if they lost one match - do you know what I mean?
I do, and yours is a contextualised approach. I am always concerned where I see Influencers and similar saying 'Fail fast' or 'I never learned anything from winning,' which is so small minded and completely missies the point of leaning irrespective of whether it is from winning or loosing. make sure you keep the depth and context.
Now I'm offended...influencer?! ;) Yeah, I am totally with you. It's like the "do this ONE thing to get this" or "this ONE mindset trick" that fall into the same category for me because there is no depth or context, like you say. And, actually, what I probably should have say also is the (in my eyes) true failure is just stopping at that point of loss. So, like never competing again because you lost gold, or something like that.
